Translators without Borders, a US 501(c) 3 non-profit with an operations center in Kenya, was founded in 1993 to provide translations to non-profit organizations. In 2011, the organization started a virtual platform to better coordinate these resources. In the last five years, we have translated over 30 million words of life-saving and life-changing content in over 100 languages. Our Words of Relief crisis translation network activations around the Ebola crisis and Nepal earthquake have won widespread praise from the international community. Most recently, we have activated Words of Relief to provide rapid response translation and on-the-ground interpretation for organizations responding in the European Refugee crisis.
Words of Relief, first piloted in 2013 – 14 in Kenya through a grant by the Humanitarian Innovation Fund (HIF), is the first crisis relief translation network in the world. As we have activated the network over the past two years, demand for the services has grown, as has the need to build a sustainable funding structure.
