Role
We are looking for three mid-level researchers with experience in working on safeguarding and Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) who are fluent in English and at least one other language (French, Swahili, or Arabic) to deliver a literature mapping and conduct some key informant interviews (KIIs) on PSEA. The literature mapping will extend an existing resource library on safeguarding and PSEA hosted by the Resource and Support Hub (RSH), which supports organizations in the aid sector to strengthen their safeguarding policy and practice against Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Harassment (SEAH). Together with the KIIs the literature review will aso feed into two thematic guidance papers to be prepared on this topic by TWB.
The first round of literature mapping and the KIIs are planned for early December 2020. A second round of literature mapping is planned for May 2021.
Responsibilities
The Research and Language Consultants will work remotely and report to TWB’s PSEA Advisor and Global Researcher. The consultants will identify and categorize available resources on safeguarding and PSEA in French, Swahili and Arabic following predefined criteria. KIIs will be conducted with PSEA focal points, field staff and experts, exploring the impact of language, including sensitivities of language use around SEAH, typical language and translation barriers, and communication challenges when engaging with PSEA, as well as the implications for doing research on SEAH.
Literature mapping (4 days allocated to this per language):
Identify a minimum of 30 resources (reports, studies, assessments, operational documents, academic articles) on safeguarding/PSEA/SEAH in French, Swahili and/or Arabic using search engines, PSEA platforms, databases, and literature portals.
Select resources that fulfill quality and accessibility criteria to be included in the library and document selection process.
Map chosen resources, selecting and providing keywords from a predefined list of categories.
Write an abstract of maximum 100 words in English and the language of the resource for each resource chosen to be included in the database.
Literature review (4 days allocated to this):
Identify, review, and document available literature on the impact of language on PSEA and research around SEAH following relevance, quality and accessibility.
Document findings from the literature in a following a predefined outline
Key informant interviews (2 days allocated to this):
Coordinate times and dates for interviews with pre-identified research participants
Conduct eight remote (phone/zoom call) key informant interviews on the impact of language on PSEA and the implications for research with PSEA focal points, field staff, and experts.
Audio-record and document the interviews.
General/communication:
Participate in briefing and debriefing sessions with TWB staff (phone call)
Present initial findings within TWB and to key partners (phone call)
Organize and hand over all data, notes, resources and other research materials to TWB
Deliverables
List of a minimum of 30 resources on safeguarding and PSEA in either Arabic, French or Swahili, selected and categorized according to predefined criteria, with keywords and an abstract of approx. 100 words in English and the source language
Written review of an additional 10 resources on the impact of language on PSEA with full reference of the literature reviewed
List of reviewed resources not selected and reason for exclusion
Audio files and notes from 8 interviews conducted
Profile
The Researcher should be a creative self-starter with a strong sense of initiative and enthusiastic about the importance of increasing access to knowledge through language. The right candidate has a good understanding of language barriers in humanitarian programming and a very good understanding of safeguarding and PSEA. Practical experience of working on PSEA is a definite plus.
Requirements
Higher education degree in a relevant subject, Masters degree preferred
2+ years of professional or academic experience in social science research
Knowledge of safeguarding and PSEA essential, knowledge of PSEA literature a plus
Experience conducting key informant interviews, preferably remote via phone
Excellent written and spoken English
Excellent language skills (written and spoken) in at least one of the following: Arabic, French, Swahili
Ability to work remotely without significant support
Sociolinguistic background preferred
Background
Translators without Borders and Social Development Direct are collaborating on the development of the Resource and Support Hub (RSH) which aims to support organisations in the aid sector to strengthen their safeguarding policy and practice against Sexual Exploitation, Abuse and Sexual Harassment (SEAH). Language is central to PSEA by making sure that a) rules on sexual conduct are clear and available in languages that people understand, and b) survivors of SEAH can report incidences in a language they feel comfortable in. With the research products outlined above TWB will contribute to the Evidence and Learning workstream of the RSH and help to extend the reach of the resource library as well as providing further practical resources for organizations engaging with PSEA.
